French Asymmetric 18th c. Rococo Frame, carved and gilded wood, circa 1735-40

About the Item

A circa 1735-40 stunning and idiosyncratic ‘wall furniture’ French asymmetric Rococo frame, with flowered swept sides and back, sumptuously carved with complex highly mouvementé projecting deeply pierced scrolling foliate corners and centres, magnificent top and bottom centres rocaille shell cartouches, above a fine and very rare shell-like ribbing undulant background. The top sight edge is fitted with two spandrels. The frame is in lime on a back in oak, as usually. The beautiful burnished gilding of the plain back area is widely untouched. The rest of the gilding is also original except small restorations of exterior decorative elements. The losses of carved parts are minor. The general condition of the frame is rather very good. This exceptional and extremely rare luxury Rococo bordure is possibly the work of a big-name. 18th century mercury mirror recently installed. Sight size: 81 x 69 cm Over all: 118 x 105 cm
