About the Item

French Green and Gold Ceramic Mirror by Alice Colonieu, Mid-20th Century The mirrored part is not original and not signed but you can see on the last picture of Alice colonieu with the mirror in her hands. Alice Colonieu was a French ceramist, painter and sculptor born on 5 November 1924 in Marseille. After completing her studies at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille, Colonieu attended the École de Formation Artistique de Fontcarrade in Montpellier and later established a studio near Orange. From the 1940s to the 1980s, Colonieu worked in clay, creating heavy, colourful ceramics made without moulds and using the colombin technique. She exhibited at the Salon des Arts Décoratifs in 1953 and 1954 and was a member of the Fédération des Métiers d'Art in 1953. Colonieu also participated in the first International Ceramic Festival in Cannes in 1955 and won a gold medal at the National Arts Exhibition in 1961. She worked with great decorators such as Jean Royère and Jules Leleu and produced ceramics for public buildings such as the Post Office in Isle-sur-Sorgue and the Frédéric-Mistral school in Avignon. Colonieu's work can be found in the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the International Ceramic Museum in Faenza, as well as in international private collections. In the mid-1960s, Colonieu stopped producing ceramics for mass consumption and concentrated on specific commissions. She then moved to Roaix, in the Vaucluse, where she painted and illustrated books. Colonieu died on 16 July 2010 in Roaix.

  • Desk with Shelf and Drawers by René Gabriel, 1950
    By Rene Gabriel
    Located in PARIS, FR
Desk with shelf and drawers by René Gabriel, 1950 This desk is one of the last pieces designed by the greatest designer of the French Reconstruction: René Gabriel (1899-1950). René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...
