About the Item
Mirror. Carved and gilded wood. Spain, 19th century.
Rectangular wall mirror with a frame made of carved and gilded wood, with some openwork areas. It has a crest at the top, with architectural and vegetal decoration (garlands of flowers, leaves...) arranged around (and symmetrically) a curved form reminiscent of 18th-century Rococo rockeries. Note also the wavy edges of the frame in this area. In the rest, outside the usual composition of plain mouldings, a series of plant and architectural motifs (scrolls, leaves, scrolls, etc.) are arranged, with some detail showing, once again, a certain Rococo influence. The piece shows a clear influence of 18th-century Rococo works, as mentioned above, but with an arrangement more common in 19th-century works. In addition, a clear French influence can be mentioned (in this school we would speak of a Louis XV style). Compare, for example, several mirrors in the Museo Cerralbo in Madrid in which the upper part of the mirror shows gentle curves (inv. 04166 -dated to the second half of the 19th century-, etc.). -
