Customizable STACKED Scalloped Mirror by Richard Haining, Shown in Walnut
About the Item
Let’s talk custom. It could be as simple as tailoring the scale of this Scalloped Mirror to fit a specific environment, or designing something entirely new.
The beauty of Richard’s signature STACKED style is based entirely in the process. Each STACKED object he creates is built, sculpted, and finished entirely by hand. Imagine an analog version of 3-D printing, or coil pottery. The desired profile is defined during the building process. Piece by individual piece, layer upon layer, he additively sculpts each form, controlling both the wall thickness as well as the profile. Once constructed, Richard refines the exterior using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed quality with subtle undulations very similar to that of hand built ceramics.
While this mirror is within a private collection, we can tailor our style to create a mirror specific to your space. Do your needs require something that is Oval? Or, rectilinear? Larger? Or, smaller? Horizontal? Or, vertical? A different wood species? We will work together to design a form that is perfect for you or your clients space.
*Pricing is based on a similar design. Revisions to the existing design above may be subject to additional charges.

Richard Haining
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
Custom sizes, shapes, and wood species are available upon request, noting that variations may incur additional cost. Please be aware, due to the nature of the STACKED process, and the qualities inherent to each piece of wood, each finished frame is unique. Please feel free to contact Richard to discuss any options you are considering, as he'd be happy to tailor this piece for you or your client's space.
