Our etched glass mirror designed by Simon Gate (1883-1945) for Orrefors is one of two mirrors commissioned for the Swedish oceanliner, M/S Kungsholm, which took its maiden voyage in 1929. It has a rectangular shaped metal frame bordered by 28 shaped glass plaques with double welt caming etched with nude figures, mermaids, tridents and dolphins. Signed in lower right ORREFORS S. GATE 1928. This is one of two mirrors that hung in the vestibule connecting the first-class main lounge and the music room. The whereabouts of the other mirror is not known. The M/S Kungsholm was built in 1928 and had her inaugural voyage when she sailed to the Caribbean for the Swedish American Lines in 1929. The Kungsholm was not the largest of ships, but it was designed and decorated as a showcase for luxurious Art Deco design by the finest of Sweden's artists. Notably, this is one of a very few number of decorative objects from the ship that have survived following its seizure by the U.S. in 1941 for the transport of troops in WWII. The interior of the ship was designed by Carl Bergsten to showcase the very best of Swedish fine and decorative arts to the world. For more information, we invite you to read the lot essay from the Christie's sale in 1991 which included the mirror in lot 248. Literature: * Gustaf Munthe, Swedish Arts and...

Scandinavian Modern Signed Mirror by Erik Höglund for Eriksmåla, Kosta Boda, 1967. Those familiar with Höglunds glass design will recognize the same simplicity, humor and a fine sense of material that defines his works in glass. He liked utensils to be robust, and a bit quirky. Among all types of wood, he favored pine, which he thought was as good as the most popular wood in the 1960s- imported teak. Erik Höglund, the Swedish "le enfant terrible" (1932-1988), was both a painter, sculptor as well as an craftsman. He worked for Kosta Boda, Strömbergshyttan and Eriksmåla. He are known in Sweden for his popular colorful glass and provokative motivs. These wooden pained mirrors...
