Antique Huge George III Silver Flagon, 1810

About the Item

This is a wonderful huge antique English George III sterling silver tankard with spout, which bears hallmarks for London 1810 and the makers mark of Joseph Smith. It has wonderful embossed decoration, the work of a master silversmith, and has an interesting Coat of Arms and a Crest which I have had researched, see script below and the pictures. There is no mistaking its unique quality and design, which is sure to make it a treasured piece by any discerning collector. Condition: In excellent condition with clear hallmarks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 26 x Width 30 x Depth 20 & Weight 56 troy oz Dimensions in inches: Height 10 inches x Width 1 foot x Depth 8 inches & Weight 1.74 kg The Marital Arms of Mundy and Cavendish The arms as engraved upon this George III English S terling Silver Flagon by Joseph Smith hallmarked London 1810 are those of Mundy impaling Cavendish. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing on the dexter (the heraldic right on the left as you view the piece) the arms of the husband and on the sinister (the heraldic left on the right as you view it) the arms of the wife. These armorial bearings may be blazoned as follows: Arms: (on the dexter) Per pale gules and sable on a cross engrailed argent five lozenges purpure a chief or charged with three eagles’ legs erased à la quise azure (for Mundy) (on the sinister) Sable three stags’ heads cabossed argent attired or within a bordure of the second (for Cavendish) Crest: A wolf’s head erased sable bezanty fire issuing from its mouth proper (for Mundy) The armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Francis Noel Mundy (born 29th November 1844 died 10th January 1903) and Emily Maria 2 Georgiana Cavendish (baptised 9th November 1845 died 6th August 1929). Francis and Emily were married on the 12th July 1864 at St George’s Hanover Square in the County of Middlesex. Francis was the only child of William Mundy, of Markeaton Hall in the County of Derbyshire and Harriett Georgiana Frampton. The Mundy family had been seated at Markeaton since the reign of King Henry VIII when Sir John Mundy acquired the Manor of Markeaton from the Tuchet family in 1516. Sir John Mundy went on to serve as the Lord Mayor of London during the year 1522. Elizabeth’s parents were the Honourable Richard Cavendish, of Thornton Hall in the Cavendish and Elizabeth Maria Margaret Hart and her paternal grandfather was Richard Cavendish, the 2nd Baron Waterpark who descended from William Cavendish, of Doveridge Hall in the County of Derbyshire who was the natural son of William Cavendish, the 3rd Duke of Devonshire.
