Rare pair of Cartel and barometer, Paris, circa 1775. Rare alcove Cartel barometer sheet and ormolu, Paris, 1775. Model vase-shaped balusters, body sheet metal adorned with a natural enamel dial, the latter stressed laurel garlands and flanked by two winged figures in gilded bronze. The lamp ending in a cul-ended acanthus leaves and a pine cone, the upper friezes gadroons and bud. The three-hand dial showing the days of the month, hours and minutes. The two bells in passing and demand hours, halves and quarters. Work Cartel Parisien transition period Louis XV-Louis XVI 1775. The barometer model, work Parisien Napoleon III. Dimensions: Height 72 cm; width 33 cm. Stylistic Study: The design of this Cartel is known, from a sample book published in Paris, circa 1775. Formerly held in the library of Jacques Doucet is now preserved at the National Institute of History of Art in Paris. (INHA) The drawing is shown in: H. and P. Ottomeyer Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Band I, Munich, 1986 fig.4.1.8 Although presented in some books as a Bronzier, annotation "Brecourt" this drawing is probably the work of a decorator commissioned to design models. The winged figures very fashionable under the Regency come directly from drawings by Nicolas Pineau, they clearly recall the most beautiful creations of Charles Cressent. Yet the hairstyle of the latter, the garlands of laurel and shape to ancient vase betray the imminent arrival of Louis XVI style. We are in the presence of a work hinge between two styles, the Louis XV and Louis XVI. Comparative analysis: This model is extremely rare, only six models are listed: -A Model auctioned at Koller, movement signed Charles Voisin. (lot sale of 1191- 03/27/2014) -A Model past on sale at Khon, movement signed Lepaute. (sale November 27, 2009, lot 61) -A Model shown on page 195 of the book by Pierre Kjellberg "encyclopedia of French pendulum" and having been on the exhibition "madness of Artois" Bagatelle in 1988. Movement signed Lieutaud. _ A model in the Swedish royal collections, movement signed Charles Leroy. _A Model presented at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris (18th halls), the movement signed Gilles. -A Model accompanied by a barometer went on sale at Sotheby's in London December 13 1991. (probably our pair). The grounds at the tops of cartels are all different, making each piece unique, pine apple for our model, ribbon bow, flame or simple ring for others. The quality of carving, rarity and royal from a copy inevitably put us on the track of a great bronze sculptor. The registers are particularly well supplied with accession dates to the mastery of the whole corporation for that period, it seems unlikely that Brecourt was bronzier, no document mentioning. It was probably just the author of the drawing and signed. As against a comprehensive study on fives watch Neighbours Lepaute Lieutaud-and-Gilles Leroy tells us they all collaborated with Robert Osmond. Combined with a recurring use by Osmond vases in antique, pine cones, flames, buds and garlands of laurel perfectly similar, we can affirm that it is the author of these cartels. The complex movement, double barrel, which equips our model has been used particularly in the northern countries, Germany, Austria and Sweden. It is likely whether an export model for Sweden, molten bronze in Paris and the movement assembled in Stockholm, the presence of a copy in the Royal Collection at the time who could create demand.
