Suite of dressers and nightstands. Milan, early 19th cent.

About the Item

Suite consisting of pair of three-drawer dressers and two door-opening nightstands, one of which has a pull-out compartment; veneered in four-part bois de violette with borders in bois de rose, walnut and with medallion reserves inlaid in maple, stained maple, olive and boxwood. The uprights, feet as well as the connecting brackets are inlaid on a burnt stucco background with candelabras composed of phytomorphic elements and vases, bellflowers, and rosettes; the border of the front and side reserves is also inlaid with leafy frets on a stucco background. In the under-top band are inlaid reserves with Greek and floral elements. The pair of dressers houses allegorical figures set in medallions on the front and sides, those on the sides repeated on the front of the nightstands. Bardiglio gray marble tops, truncated pyramidal feet. Hardware partially replaced. The suite comes from the Lombard production that is traditionally attributed to Giovan Battista Maroni. He was a pupil of the well-known cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini, who had a workshop in Milan and produced furniture of excellent workmanship side by side with a more serial production in which the furniture in question should be included. Several pieces of furniture passed on the market or in private collections similar to these, including a group on which GBM's signature was found in full. This simpler production is characterized by a repetitiveness of decoration arrangement, rich under-top band, inlaid rounds in the center, and candelabras in the uprights. The use of burnt putty primer as a substitute for wood, while very popular in the market, was a cheaper, though not simpler solution, which saved wood but at the same time gave an almost marble-like effect to the primer. The pleasantness of these productions emerges, in the color arrangement of fine woods and inlays and in the harmony of the proportions of the furniture.
