19th Century French Renaissance Bed
About the Item
19th Century French Renaissance Bed is a marvel of the wood sculptor's art! With detail too abundant to fully explore in this description, it is a testament to a talented artist capable of rendering both naturalistic and stylized interpretations of timeless Renaissance themes in full relief, bas relief and intaglio style carving. Centered on the headboard is a magnificent crown with facing scrolled arches framing an elaborate heraldic crest festooned with acanthus scrolls and foliage and a watchful protector in full relief. Multiple tiers of hand-carved molding separate the crown from the bonnet, and appear throughout the design. The bonnet features a different interpretation of the scrolled acanthus leaf and crest designs, framed by boldly carved rectangular rosettes on the corners in both directions, atop which appear flaming urn finials. Below the rosettes are barley twist columns providing a framework for the carved raised panels that extend all the way down to the mattress area of the design. The barley twist columns mount to the lower framework which is a massive rendition of the bonnet on the headboard, with eagles and lions included in the design, and once again bold rectangular rosettes on the corners facing both directions. As is typical of French designs, the footboard is complementary yet unique, with different yet stunning renditions of the themes, adding a vase with a floral bouquet at its own crown, with grapevines added as well. Even the inside of the footboard has received the attentions of the wood sculptor to ensure the proud owner always has a beautiful view of this keepsake no matter the angle!

Sculpted from walnut, it features artistry exhibited from the crown of the headboard to the arbalette base of the footboard which happens to match the side rails. The gracefully arched headboard consists of complex hand-carved molding surrounding a Greek coin border all across the crown, centered with an exquisitely rendered wreath of roses tied together with flowing ribbon. Egg finials on foliate bases adorn the corners, underneath which are rosettes and bell flowers, with more rosettes on the corner of the caned panel. As should be the case, the footboard has received equal attentions of the sculptor, with a boldly molded framework in an ovoid shape centered with a laurel wreath tied with ribbon mounted atop the double caned panel. Triangular rosettes provide an accent, with square rosettes serving as end caps on each corner under which are more bell flowers. The original painted finish has achieved a lovely patina and a charming state of distress that only adds to the allure and desirability of this magnificent work of the cabinetmaker's art!
