Pair of woven rattan beds. Louis Sognot, circa 1955. Measures: Headboard height 31.10 in Headboard width 43.31 in Length 84.64 in Footboard height 27.16 in Footboard width 42.13 in Louis Sognot (1892-1969) Born in 1892, Louis Sognot learned cabinetmaking at Jansen and worked in the Krieger workshop specializing in the fitting out of ocean liners. In 1920, he returned to the department stores of Printemps where he would direct the Primavera workshop, which would allow him to present his first pieces of furniture at the Salon d'Automne and the Decorative Artists. Very inspired by the modern movement and in particular cubism, he developed a personal style, carrying out with Charlotte Alix many metal sets located in a certain French tradition. Close to Le Corbusier, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, René Herbst or Marcel Breuer, he abandoned metal for rattan during the crisis of the 1930s. His first attempts relate to the decoration of villas or buildings for small communities. Thus, at the Salon des Arts Ménagers in 1939, he presented a hotel room entirely made of rattan. After the Second World War, he defined a new decorative vocabulary using mostly light wood, rattan and sometimes metal, on an ad hoc basis. In 1951, with the household arts fair, he established himself as the rattan specialist. Very dynamic until the 1960s, he exhibited at the Salon des arts ménagers but also at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. Creating furniture with flexible and vigorous lines whose forms are not without evoking sometimes older styles more Classic. This rare set that we present to you is characteristic of this type of rattan furniture that Sognot created with flexible lines and a warm and light atmosphere.
