About the Item
20th century, French Louis XV style Chinoiserie Lacquered Wood Night Stend
This pair of bedside tables was made in the 20th century, in France, in Louis XV style.
They have a marble top of Broccatello di Spagna moulded and with a wavy profile. The structure is entirely in black lacquered wood and decorated with gold and polychrome lacquer. The front has two drawers with gilded bronze holds chiseled with rocaille motifs and decorated with architecture and gardens characteristic of Chinese culture, enlivened by figures dressed in oriental fashion. The sides are decorated with paintings of oriental taste with composition of flowers and plants and birds. Some details of the decorations are made in relief with cast plaster. The profiles of the furniture are surrounded by a golden reserve that gives more three-dimensionality and brightness. On the front uprights, two applications in gilded bronze chiseled with volutes and phytomorphic elements embellish the furniture. Likewise the golden bronze tips that conclude the four legs, sinuous and arched, characteristic of the Louis XV style.
These bedside tables, very decorative, are particularly suitable in modern environments, while maintaining the timeless charm of antique furniture in cineseria. They can be proposed as bedside tables, but also as cabinets to be placed in other environments such as studios, living rooms, entrances and corridors.
The term Cineserie derives from the French "Chinoiserie" and refers to a period of European art, from the eighteenth century and spread until the nineteenth century, in which there was a considerable influence of Chinese art, also in the wake of a growing interest that Europe had developed for everything exotic in general. This period was characterized by the use of imaginative images of an imaginary China and palaces and living rooms of the nobility and the rich bourgeoisie were soon furnished with objects from the Far East or made in Europe with obvious derivation and inspiration ornate Chinese. In France, as in the rest of Europe, rowing for China and film series was very popular in the eighteenth century. This taste continued to be appreciated in the following century and again in the early years of the twentieth century, and then returned today appreciated for its decorativeness and charm towards the East.
