Each volume of 128 focuses of the life's work of an individual master and contains an informative introductory essay and 55 key works accompanied by extended captions. Contemporary Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama (b.1938) has made a radical impact on the photographic world in both Japan and in the West. His snapshot aesthetic and no-viewfinder style have succeeded in challenging the medium's prevailing orthodoxies. Moriyama was a member of the famous PROVOKE magazine, and a lecturer and theorist, influencing the new generation of Japanese photographers. The first monograph on American Magnum photographer Steve McCurry (b.1950), which covers all facets of his work. McCurry's photographs capture human experience in the best documentary tradition and transcend boundaries of language and culture; he has also covered many areas of international conflict from the Iran-Iraq War and Beirut to the Gulf War. Universally recognized for his evocative colour photography, McCurry's memorable images are known to many through his work for National Geographic magazine. Introductory essay and picture-by-picture commentary text by Anthony Bannon situates McCurry's life and work within the history of photography. This monograph forms an introduction to the major themes and the key images of American photographer Joel Meyerowitz. An introductory essay by Colin Westerbeck discusses Meyerowitz's life and work and places him both in the context of his time and within the history of photography. Shooting film in black-and-white, he travelled around the United States for months. An early advocate of colour photography, Meyerowitz was instrumental in changing the attitude toward the use of colour from one of resistance to nearly universal acceptance. His subject matter evolved from incidents on city streets shot with a small 35 mm camera to the large format field photograph. Architecture, light and space - particularly at Cape Cod - acquired a new interest for him. After the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded access to Ground Zero where he systematically documented the work of demolition and excavation, rescue and recovery. The work of Martin Parr (b. 1952) bridges the divide between art and documentary photography. His studies of the idiosyncrasies of mass culture and consumerism around the world, his innovative imagery and his prolific output have placed him firmly at the forefront of contemporary art. An active member of the Magnum photographic agency since 1994, Parr has also worked in fashion and commercial photography, and film-making. He has also made a number of influential photobooks on his work, including The Last Resort (1986), Think of England (2000, Phaidon) and Boring Postcards Uk and US (2000, Phaidon) and is himself an avid collector of books and a world authority on the photobook, co-authoring The Photobook: A History Volume I, II and III (published by Phaidon). It was during the depth of the Great Depression of the late 1920s and 30s, when at least 14 million people were out of work in the USA, that Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) first ventured out on the streets with her camera. In 1935 a report on migrant workers, illustrated with Lange’s photographs, came to the attention of Roy Stryker and in response he invited Lange to become a member of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographic unit. Like Stryker, Lange believed that photography was a tool of political action, and this was no more apparent then when the federal government responded to the starvation crisis shortly after the San Francisco News received Lange’s photographs – it quickly supplied 20,000 pounds of food to feed hungry migrants at the camps. When the bitter years of the Depression were overtaken by the advent of World War II, she continued to demonstrate her opposition to the poor treatment of migrants by opposing the relocation of 110,000 American Japanese to internment camps. She recorded the evacuation in Northern California after being assigned by the War Relocation Authority. In 1955, after a bout of ill health, Lange continued to work on contemporary social issues, namely a photo-essay for 'Life' magazine, a sensitive study of the work of a Yugoslav-American public defender.Lange was the first woman to be awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship (1941) and was placed on the Honour Roll of the American Society of Magazine Photographers in 1963. Guy Bourdin was born in Paris in 1928 and received his first photographic training whilst performing military service in Senegal in 1948–9. His photographs were first shown in Paris in 1952 and he began working for French Vogue in 1954. Bourdin demanded and was allowed unique editorial control and amazingly he extended this to his principal client in advertising, the shoe company Charles Jourdan, who first commissioned him in the 1960s. Bourdin's approach to campaigns reflected a distinct change for advertising in this period. Bourdin rejected the 'product shot' in favour of atmospheric, often surreal tableaux and suggestions of narrative. Bourdin was not alone in demystifying the object, but he was the most radical in his approach. The impact of the imagery of Guy Bourdin on both commercial and fine art photography continues to resonate today. His fashion shoots are mysterious, hypnotic, surreal, exposing the true and unnerving nature of desire. He shows that, within the context of fashion, it is rarely the product that compels us. It is the image – carefully staged narrative of sexual fantasy, the quest for the unattainable, the suggestion of danger – that stimulates consumer desire. Nan Goldin is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading photographers. Born in Washington DC, Goldin grew up in Boston where she began taking photographs at the age of fifteen. She has since lived in New York, Bangkok, Berlin, Tokyo and Paris, amassing an extensive body of work that represents a fascinating photographic portrait of our time. Since the 1980s Goldin has consistently created images that are intimate and compelling; they tell personal stories of relationships, friendships and identity, but simultaneously chronicle different eras and the passage of time. Her 'snapshot'-esque images of her friends –drag queens, drug addicts, lovers and family– are intense, searing portraits that, together, make a document of her life. Goldin herself has commented on her photographic style and philosophy, saying, 'My work originally came from the snapshot aesthetic... Snapshots are taken out of love and to remember people, places, and shared times. They're about creating a history by recording a history.'
