18th Century Child's Thumb Back Windsor High Chair

About the Item

18th Century Child's Thumb Back Windsor High Chair, circa 1780, an American Colonial Period Country Thumback Windsor High Chair with flattened finials on two standards holding two back slats and turned arms above a woven splint seat, raised on turned legs braced by double dowel stretchers that have been well eroded by resting feet over the centuries. Please note that the "background remover" in the photographs has removed some of the stretchers; they are all present and in great condition! Windsor chairs would generally have been originally painted kin their day to hide the differing woods used; this chair is made with well matched birch and maple so may have perhaps not been painted. If it had been painted, that surface was removed well over a century ago to allow the present lovely warm patina to have developed. The condition remains excellent.
