About the Item

Architect - Will Burtin Germany, 1908-1972 Literature: Design for the Corporate World 1950 - 1975, ed. by Wim de Wit, Lund Humphries in Association with the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, Stanford University, 2017, pp. 188-119. Exhibition: Creativity on the Line: Design for the Corporate World 1950 - 1975, April 26 - August 21, 2017, Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University. This model of the Kodak Pavilion at the 1964 NYWF was commissioned by Kodak, and is one of an unknown, though quite limited number made by Displaymasters, Inc. of Edgewater, NJ. These were not sold at the Fair, but distributed to Kodak dealers (and, perhaps, others) to build interest in this exhibit. Displaymasters generally produced other types of models, including replicas of Holstein cows for the milk industry, and figures of Johnnie Walker, mascot of that brand of whisky. A very recent exhibition at the Queens Museum "That Kodak Moment: Picturing the New York Fairs" included another of these models. The following is from a press release put out by Kodak at the conclusion of the fair, explaining their intent with the pavilion: "This picture-taker's paradise was the most photographed event in history, and the many millions of Fairgoers who visited the Kodak Pavilion came away with a new awareness of the achievements of the Company in chemicals, fibers and plastics as well as the broad spectrum of photography. "Management's intent was to dramatize to the world, through some 20 exhibits, the fun and ease of picture-taking and the role of photography as a medium of international communications. We wanted to demonstrate photography's potential in promoting "Peace Through Understanding" -- the theme of the Fair. At the same time we hoped to acquire new friends for Kodak," said Mr. Casey (General Manager of the Kodak Pavilion).
