TOPPAI JINGASA EDO PERIOD - 18-19th Century - Japan

About the Item

This is a custom-made historical Japanese hat known as Jinggasa, worn by samurai during the Edo period (1603-1868), around the 18th to 19th century. Within the category of Jingasa, there were various types, and this particular one is referred to as ichimonji gasa or hara gasa (flat type). Crafted from layers of paper and cloth, it boasts a robust construction with a heavy surface lacque. Designed to be worn as a helmet, it was often waterproof. Samurai of higher ranks adorned their Jingasa with a mon (family crest) in gilt lacquer for identification. This specific Jingasa stands out due to its distinctive decorations. The black exterior showcases a textured surface reminiscent of tree bark. In contrast, the underside, typically covered with simple monochrome lacquer, features la vibrant red background. The overall visual impact is striking. Provenance: The Jingasas on sale belonged to a private collection of the directors of Bapty & Co, Mark & Peter Dineley, recognized as the largest suppliers of original weapons and armour for use in theatre and cinema. This Jingasa retains its originality, exhibiting a mellow patina and wear along the edges and surface consistent with its historical usage.
