Air Force Academy Colorado Felt Vintage Pennant, circa 1960s

Presented is a souvenir felt pennant celebrating the servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Corps who were based in Australia and fought alongside members of the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII. The navy pennant features a printed red outline of the Australian continent with the U.S. Air Corps “wings” superimposed on it. Below, the text reads, “Souvenir of U.S. Air Corps in Australia.” At the very bottom of the pennant is the U.S. Air Corps symbol. Framed according to archival standards, this pennant symbolizes the collaborative partnership between the United States and Australia during the height of the Second World War in the Pacific Theater. Following the swift Japanese conquest of the Philippines and East Indies in late 1941, the remaining servicemen of the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific eventually relocated to Australia, to join other US and Australian units, including the Fifth Air Force, and regroup. The Fifth Air Force was placed under the command of Major General George Kenney in July of 1942. Offered is a unique collage featuring signatures from some of the greatest captains in history: Claire Chennault, Henry “Hap” Arnold, Hoyt Vandenberg, Carl “Tooey” Spaatz, William “Billy” Mitchell and Edward “Eddie” Rickenbacker. These men are some of the most influential figures in U.S. Air Force history. Each captain was involved in WWI and/or WWII, some were aces who proved the usability and effectiveness of airpower, and others were brilliant leaders who paved the way for U.S. victories and the development of the U.S. Air Force. This framed collage includes original signatures on cards, a letter, and a photo. A photo of a biplane is featured at bottom and includes signatures from Claire Chennault, Hap Arnold, and Hoyt Vandenberg. There is also a letter, dated 1942 and featured prominently in the center of the collage, that is written to Elwood Maurer and signed by Carl Spaatz. Two cards appear on either side of the letter, with signatures from Eddie Rickenbacker and William Mitchell. Postcard production blossomed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, as railroads opened up much of the Western frontier to new and exciting travel opportunities. Seven Falls is one of Colorado’s most captivating natural wonders. Located at the base of the Front Range, this magnificent series of waterfalls is situated in a 1,250-foot-wall box canyon between the towering Pillars of Hercules and boasts a 181-foot drop of falling water. Seven Falls was originally part of land given to Nathan Colby in 1872 as part of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead Act granted 160 acres of surveyed land to pioneers in the west, with claimants required to “improve” the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land.
