'After the Funeral' was the last book written by Paul Scott (1920 – 1978), author of 'The Raj Quartet', who died shortly after receiving the 1977 Booker Prize for fiction for his novel 'Staying On'. It begins with an introductory memoir by Roland Gant, on of Scott's closest friends, whose own career as a writer and publisher overlapped more or less continuously with Scott's from 1945 onwards In 'After the Funeral' Paul Scott retells the story of Cinderella. It is said that there are only about half-a-dozen plots in the world, that these are embodied in the traditional fairy tales, and that even modern novels and short stories are variations of them. Just occasionally a contemporary writer will deliberately set out to retell one of these old tales in his own fashion. Paul Scott, resisting the temptations of ironic approach and Freudian interpretation, but dispensing with demonstrable magic, has written an enchanting new version of one of the best loved stories of all. In an unusually close collaboration between author and artist, his daughter Sally has produced eight meticulously intricate yet lively illustrations which perfectly match the mood and imagery of the text. This is her first published work as an illustrator, and David Butcher of The Whittington Press considers it "Technically one of the best books we have printed."
