Andy Warhol

About the Item

Author Gregor Muir and Yilmaz Dziewior, Contributions by Kenneth Brummel and Stephan Diederich and Olivia Laing A new reading of Warhol presents his life and work in the context of contemporary concerns, emphasizing his continued relevance in the digital age. As an underground art star, Andy Warhol was the antidote to the prevalent Abstract Expressionist style of the 1950s. His work in advertising, fashion, film, and music videos featured popular everyday subjects, openly acknowledged wide-ranging influences, and had a fascination with popular culture. Looking at his background in an immigrant family, ideas of death and religion, sexuality, and ambition to push traditional artistic boundaries, the book reveals Warhol as an artist who succeeded and failed in equal measure and who embraced the establishment while cavorting with the underground. It explores Warhol's flirtation with the commercial world of celebrity alongside his socially engaged collaborations and advocacy of alternative lifestyles. Including many iconic as well as lesser-known works, this book highlights Warhol's conceptual ambition within the shifting creative and political landscape, permitting a broad view of how Warhol, and his work, mark a period of cultural transformation. About The Author Gregor Muir is director of collection, Tate Modern. Yilmaz Dziewior is director of Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Kenneth Brummel is associate curator, Modern Art, Art Gallery of Ontario. Stephan Diederich is curator, Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Diedrich Diederichsen is a music journalist and cultural critic. Olivia Laing is a novelist and cultural critic. • At Home with Dogs and Their Designers Sharing a Stylish Life
    By Rizzoli International Publications
    Located in New York, NY
Written by Susanna Salk, Foreword by Robert Couturier, Photographed by Stacey Bewkes America's leading interior designers show readers how to live in the most stylish way with their adorable dogs, offering an array of inspirational tips for keeping both your home and dogs attractive and chic The most elegant, stylish, and well-appointed house is nothing but a shell without its inhabitants, including the canine kind. Just ask the 22 A-List interior designers who grace the pages of At Home with Dogs and Their Designers who love nothing more than letting their best pals sleep in bed with them, cuddle on the couch, and essentially rule the roost. No room is off limits, no piece of furniture banned, clothing is optional, but their accessories are just as chic as their surroundings. Accidents may happen on vintage rugs, antiques are sometimes mistaken for chew toys, and more than one pair of ruined designer shoes have befallen them, but none would consider living without their loyal and loving best friends among the things they love. With individual chapters exploring each of the dogs' amazing lives as they romp through the stunning interiors and gardens they call home with their humans, this book as much an inspirational design book, even if you don’t live with pets, as it is a resource, packed with clever tips from the interior designers themselves on ways to live with dogs. Teddy, Alex Papachristidis’ Yorkie, uses a miniature vintage chair to hop from the floor to the bed instead of doggie steps while Brooke Gianetti created a custom doggie gate made from antique wooden doors to keep Bebe, Sera, Frasier, and Sophie from getting into trouble while she is away from home. With 6 pups on the loose, Carolyne Roehm always orders extra yardage of fabric to make protective covers and quilts. Mary McDonald happily climbs on the oversized dog bed her 5 Pugs—Jack, Lulu, Boris, Eva, and Violet—share for daily “pug hugs” while Charlotte Moss’ Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Daisy and Buddy, lounge in a cabana out in the Hamptons on summer weekends. All of the featured pooches are interviewed, giving us insight into the luxury of their daily lives from their favorite places to sleep to their guilty pleasures. Complete with a resource guide for your decorative needs as well as pet needs (including adoption and rescue organizations), At Home with Dogs and Their Designers opens the door—from coast to coast, townhouse to beach house—allowing us to peek in and embrace this love letter from these designers to their pets, who are most assuredly family members. • Brooklyn Arcadia: Art, History, and Nature at Majestic Green-Wood
    By Rizzoli International Publications
    Located in New York, NY
The New York City treasure, newly photographed, is revealed as garden in the city, repository for memory, and a place for repose, inspiration, and delight. Green-Wood is a living cemetery that brings people closer to the world by memorializing the dead even as it embraces the art, history, and natural beauty of New York. Founded in 1838 and now a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood was one of the first rural cemeteries in America. By the early 1860s, it had earned an international reputation for its beauty, attracting 500,000 visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls as the nation’s greatest tourist attraction. Crowds flocked here to enjoy family outings in the finest of first-generation American landscapes. Green-Wood’s popularity helped inspire the creation of public parks, including New York City’s Central and Prospect parks. Green-Wood is 478 spectacular acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds, and paths, throughout which exists one of the largest outdoor collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century statuary and mausoleums. Four seasons of beauty offer a peaceful oasis to visitors, as well as its 570,000 permanent residents, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. At once a celebration and an invitation, the book ranges from a consideration of the natural landscape in which it is set to a close look at its architecture, statuary, symbols, typography, birds and fauna, trees, and typography. About The Author Andrew Garn is a fine art and editorial photographer whose recent books for Rizzoli include New York Deco...
