About the Item
Anna Hu: Symphony of Jewels
Opus II
By: Janet Zapata with Sarah Davis
Foreword by François Curiel
Anna Hu is a focused and single-minded artist, reaching new heights in haute jewelry design. Approaching her art with a distinctly East-meets-West philosophy and aesthetic, she constantly breaks new ground in haute jewelry design. Her extraordinary palette of colors, her knowledge of precious and semiprecious gems, and her daring experimentation with metallurgy and physical geometry have all contributed to works of unearthly beauty. Here, in the second volume of a projected multivolume series, Anna Hu looks back at the last five years and singles out a carefully curated collection of exceptional rings, bracelets, necklaces, and brooches. Born in Taiwan, Anna Hu was trained at the Walnut Hill School of the Arts near Boston as a concert cellist. After receiving degrees from the jewelry design program at New York’s FIT, the history of decorative arts and design program at Parsons, and arts administration at Columbia University, she served apprenticeships at Christie’s jewelry department, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston. In 2007 she opened Anna Hu Haute Joallerie, a French-Chinese fine jewelry brand specializing in one-of-a-kind jewelry executed by French ateliers using the rarest stones in the world. For nearly fifteen years, Anna Hu’s professional development has been guided by jewelry historian Janet Zapata, who first recognized Hu’s gifts when the young designer was studying at Parsons. In Symphony of Jewels: Opus II, Zapata surveys the impressive trajectory of Anna Hu’s career and looks to her future as one of the brightest diamonds in the world of contemporary fine jewelry design.
Janet Zapata, a historian of jewelry and decorative arts, is the author or coauthor of numerous books, including Cartier in the 20th Century, The Jewels and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Seaman Schepps.
Sarah Davis is a jewelry historian, author, and editor for the American Society of Jewelry Historians. She was editor and a co-author of Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era: The Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan Collection.
François Curiel is Chairman of Christie’s in Europe.

- Made to Measure Architecture & Interiors Book by Will Meyer and Gray DavisLocated in New York, NYMade to Measure Meyer Davis, Architecture and Interiors By: Will Meyer and Gray Davis with Dan Shaw Foreword by David Netto “With finishes or forms, Meyer Davis are not afraid to take a chance. As designers, Will and Gray like to play with opposites and conjure beauty by contrast, putting rustic wood in a skyscraper and maybe a little strongly figured marble in a log cabin. The results are consistently chic, unexpected, charismatic—and perhaps most consistently, humane. They are humane modernists. Coming from another designer, most complimentary of all is to say that their style—while original—seems inevitable, and after you see a project by Meyer Davis you say to yourself, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’” —David Netto, from the Foreword. Since forming their practice in 1999, Will Meyer and Gray Davis have designed some two hundred private and public spaces that epitomize the hip luxury style of the twenty‑first century. Their interiors are as dazzling and dramatic as they are comfortable and welcoming—a carefully calibrated balancing act that has become their trademark and won them a loyal clientele from the worlds of fashion, design, hospitality, and cutting‑edge businesses. In Made to Measure, Will Meyer and Gray Davis, in collaboration with Architectural Digest and New York Times contributor Dan Shaw, tell the story of their ascent into the upper echelon of American design and share their firm’s philosophy and process. Illustrated with hundreds of stunning photographs, plans, and drawings, the book explores the symbiosis between their residential and commercial projects, showing how each informs the other and how they’ve redefined modern luxury along the way. Will Meyer was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and studied architecture at Auburn University. Before founding Meyer Davis, he worked for architect Charles Gwathmey, designing homes for clients such as Steven Spielberg and Michael Dell. He lives with his wife and children in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and East Hampton. Gray Davis was born in Tennessee and studied at Auburn University. Before forming Meyer Davis, he worked for designers John Saladino and Thomas O’Brien on homes for clients such as Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani. He lives with his husband in Greenwich Village and Copake, New York, where they build and restore houses. Dan Shaw, a founding editor of the New York Times Style section, is a regular contributor to Architectural Digest and writes the “What I Love” column for the New York Times Sunday Real Estate section. He is cofounder of the online magazine Rural Intelligence and has cowritten several books on design, including In the Pink: Dorothy Draper—America’s Most Fabulous Decorator;Class Act: William Haines—Legendary Hollywood Decorator; Mary McDonald Interiors: The Allure of Style; and Bunny Williams’ Point of View. David Netto, a Los Angeles–based interior and furniture designer and writer, grew up in New York, where he founded his studio in 2000. In 2002 he launched NettoCollection, a pioneering line of modern children’s furniture. From 2010 to 2012 he worked for Deborah...Category

- Objects of Desire Book by Maria Hummer TuttleBy Maria TuttleLocated in New York, NYObjects of Desire By: Maria Hummer Tuttle Photography by Miguel Flores-Vianna Foreword by Edmund de Waal A personal celebration of the hunt for—and joy of living with— favorite collections and things What is it in our homes that we truly value and why? What would you take when you leave in fear of fire? Our home is an expression of ourselves in many ways, largely through the objects we accumulate. For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years, from the priceless to the flea-market finds, are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another. In this exquisitely illustrated book, she serves as our guide through three dwellings, focusing our attention on objects ranging from an ancient Chinese horse sculpture...Category

- Decorating with Carpets A Fine Foundation Book by Heather MacIsaacLocated in New York, NYDecorating with Carpets A Fine Foundation By: Ashley Stark Kenner and Chad Stark with Heather MacIsaac In decoration, a carpet’s influence is never outsized. In fact, more than any other element of a room, and as the largest and most expensive component of any design scheme, the effect a carpet has on a space is every bit as great as its size. Decorators have long recognized the importance of a fine carpet, its impact on the colors and textures of a space, its contribution to creating an atmosphere, its feel of luxury, and, with the best examples, its lasting value. Despite their essential role as the bedrock of any design scheme, beautiful carpets have lived in the shadows of recognition. Decorating with Carpets: A Fine Foundation aims to change that oversight, tapping the extensive and remarkable archive of Stark Carpet for interior design’s greatest examples. Over the course of its 75 years, Stark Carpet, the premier purveyor of carpets to the trade in the country, has worked with the each era’s most notable designers, from Billy Baldwin and Dorothy Draper to Sister Parish and Albert Hadley to Mark Hampton and Mario Buatta to contemporary leading lights such as Diamond Baratta, Victoria Hagan, Katie Ridder, and Stephen Gambrel...Category

- Maharaja's Jewels Table Book by Katherine Prior, AssoulineBy Assouline PublishingLocated in North Hollywood, CAThe stories of Indian princes and their jewelry and precious stones are brought together in this illustrated narrative tracing the rise and fall of India's leading royal houses through the dramatic fortunes of their crown jewels. Traditionally, precious metals and jewels have been, for Indians rich and poor, a repository of wealth and a status symbol. For the reigning families, jewels also had symbolic and religious significance. Also here are the original drawings by great European jewelers of the pieces they designed for their exotic and demanding clients. The text is both lively and scholarly, drawing from descriptions of such travelers as Marco Polo and Tavernier as well as Sanskrit dramatists extolling the riches of India. The core of this lavishly photographed book is the encounter between Indian princely magnificence and the best of European Jewellery designers in the 20th century when many of the Maharaja's travelled to Europe with trunks filled with traditional Indian jewels and unset stones...Category

- David Hockney Portraits by Sarah Howgate & Barbara Stern Shapiro (Book)Located in North Yorkshire, GBDavid Hockney is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. He has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of My Father (1955), and portraits of family, lovers, friends and well-known subjects represent an intimate visual diary of the artist's life. This authoritative new study examines Hockney's portraits in all media - painting, drawing, photocollage and prints - and is produced in close collaboration with the artist. Together, the authors reveal how Hockney's creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his iconic double portraits of the late 1960s and early 1970s to his cubist-influenced investigations of the 1980s and from his recent camera lucida...Category
