Antique Book, Thoughts on Hunting by William Beckford, English, Georgian, 1810
About the Item
This is an antique book, Thoughts on Hunting by William Beckford. An English language hard bound compendium of sporting letters, dating to the Georgian period, published 1810.
An English novelist and art critic, William Beckford (1760 - 1844) was the son of a former London Mayor - the significant inheritance upon his father's death afforded Beckford a lifestyle conducive to indulgence in art and architecture. A brief dalliance as a pupil of Mozart gave way to following the tutelage of Alexander Cozens (1717 - 1786), a British landscape artist. His most notable written work is Vathek - a gothic novel started in French and first published in English without Beckford's name in 1786. Other titles by Beckford include Italy - with Sketches of Spain and Portugal, and the satirical novel Azemia.
