Art across America: Two centuries of Regional Painting, 1710-1920, Three Volumes: The East and the Mid-Atlantic, The South and the Midwest, The Plains States and the West by Dr. William H Gerdts. Abbeville Press, New York, 1990. First edition hardcovers with dust jackets in slipcase. Vol. 1 has 422 pp., and 359 illustrations. Vol. 2 has 396 pp. and 352 illustrations. Vol. 3 has 396 pp. and 226 illustrations. A monumental study. Volume 1 focuses on New England, New York and The Mid-Atlantic regions. Volume 2 examines the South and the Near Midwest. Volume 3 looks at the far Midwest, Rocky Mountains West, Southwest and the Pacific. Each volume presents essays on the different states within the areas, with extensive notes and bibliography. The volumes contain more than 800 artists, making it an outstanding visual and informational reference work. A must for ny lover of American art.
