Baccio Bandinelli Scultore e Maestro

About the Item

Baccio Bandinelli scultore e maestro (1493-1560). Firenze by Heikamp Detlef and Paolozzi Strozzi Beatrice. Published by Giunti Firenze 2014. Hardcover. Gruppo Editoriale Giunti, 2014. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence, April 9-July 13, 2014. The exhibition intends to finally return Baccio Bandinelli (Florence, 1493-1560) to the prominent position in the overview of Italian sculpture of the 16th century, after his ostracism in the last two centuries. His biography is one of the most extensive among Vasari's Lives, where he defined Baccio as the ''universal architect," detesting his character, but recognizing his genius. From his death in 1560 and up to neoclassicism, the admiration for the artist was almost unanimous: Bandinelli was considered with Michelangelo the greatest sculptor of his time and it is undeniable that, after Buonarroti, he is the most important figure in the field of sculpture of the sixteenth century together with Jacopo Sansovino and Benvenuto Cellini. He was also the founder, in Rome, of the first Academy for young artists and left one of the most extensive writings of artists from the period. His main clients were the first two Popes of the Medici family - Leo X and Clement VII - and then Duke Cosimo I, for whom he became the official sculptor. A great ''draftsman,'' from his youth Bandinelli excelled over all competitors and secured - in Florence and Rome, the most demanding and prestigious artistic works from the Orfeo in Palazzo Medici, the Laocoonte degli Uffizi, to the Hercules and Cacus in Piazza della Signoria, the Monument to Giovanni dalle Bande in Piazza San Lorenzo, the large sculptural complexes of the Audience in Palazzo Vecchio, the Choir of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Tombs of Leo X and Clement VII in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Rome. The exhibition presents many of his works in sculpture and painting, drawings and prints, bronzes, medals, lead and wax models, reliefs (in marble, stucco, and bronze) that are attributed to him with certainty or were derived from his originals, or compared to preparatory graphic studies. Alongside the masterpieces - such as the Bacchus of Palazzo Pitti, the works of the Bargello, or the marble reliefs of the choir of the cathedral - are exhibited the portrait busts of Cosimo I and the magnificent juvenile Mercury of the Louvre; in painting, Leda and the Swan, the only painting by Bandinelli that was certainly signed and never presented in an exhibition; and the famous self-portrait of the artist from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. A new, large photographic campaign, created for the occasion, allows you to appreciate the works of Bandinelli down to the most refined details. With Italian text. Located in Lowestoft, GB
A very finely carved marble bust of William Ewart Gladstone dated 1868 and signed W.Theed SC William Theed was born in Staffordshire, his father, William Theed the elder being a sculptor and a craftsman at Wedgwood, known for his major work, Hercules and the Thracian Horses for one frontage of the Buckingham Palace complex. The younger Theed studied at the Royal Academy Schools, then worked for the sculptor E. H. Baily. Five years on, in 1826, he went to Rome, where he was to stay a total of 22 years, during that time working in the studios of Thorwaldson and John Gibson. Returning to London in 1848, Theed enjoyed a good reputation, being a favoured sculptor of Queen Victoria, and was commissioned to produce many portrait statues, busts, and large monuments. He showed work in the 1851 Great Exhibition, and among other high points were a group for the Albert Memorial, and five standing figures on the Inland Revenue side of Somerset House, representing Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin. Theed's statues may be seen in St Paul's (Henry Hallam), Manchester (Monument to Chetham in the Cathedral, Gladstone and Thomas Bright for the Town Hall, and James Watt in Piccadilly Gardens), Huddersfield (Robert Peel), Winchester (David Williams monument in the Cathedral), and Prince Albert statues for Grimsby, and in Australia in Macquairie Street, Sydney. He was also responsible for three of the portrait statues (Bacon, Locke, Adam Smith...
