Basquiat: Boom for Real Herbert Kasper's Estate With 1 of His Paintings Illus
About the Item
Basquiat: Boom for Real by Eleanor Nairne and Dieter Buchhart. 1st Ed hardcover no dust jacket as issued. Published by Prestel, Munich, 2017, for exhibitions in London and Frankfurt. From the estate of Herbert Kasper, his painting of "Rene Ricard," c1984 illustrated and showing the Kasper provenance. The painting was sold by at auction with Sotheby's in May of 2013 for $1,505,000. Herbert Kasper was an American fashion designer known as "Kasper." He studied English and advertising at New York University and fashion at The Parsons School of Design in New York from 1951–53 and l'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1953. He left NYU to serve in the US Army in Europe. After WW II he enrolled at Parsons, where he became a protégé of milliner Fred Frederics. After graduating, he returned to Paris for two years developing his skills in design while working for Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, and Marcel Rochas. When he returned to the US, he worked for Frederics at Mr. John. He was an avid art collector with a famous art collection, and in 2011, the Morgan Library and Museum devoted an exhibition, called “Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs,” to the designer. Published by Prestel, Munich, 2017. 280 pages and 300 color plates, with some never seen before works. Many writings and photographs which offer insight into his life as a teenager in New York in the late 1970s. Basquiat first came to prominence when he collaborated with Al Diaz to spray-paint enigmatic statements under the pseudonym SAMO©. From there he went on to work with others on collages, Xerox art, postcards, performances, and music before establishing his reputation as one of the most important painters of the 20th/21 st century. This book places his collaborations in a wider art historical context and looks at his career through the lens of performance. Six thematic chapters offer compelling research, with essays from poet Christian Campbell on SAMO©; curator Carlo McCormick on New York/New Wave; writer Glenn O'Brien on the downtown scene; academic Jordana Moore Saggese on Basquiat's relationship to film and television; and music scholar Francesco Martinelli on Basquiat's obsession with jazz. This book also features rare archival material and extensive illustrations, demonstrating how Basquiat's legacy remains more powerful and relevant than ever today.
