About the Item
Black Dolls by Margo Jefferson. Published by Radius Books/ Mingei International Museum, 2015. Hardback in dust jacket. First Edition.
This important book presents the history of African American dolls between 1850 and 1940, created for the children in their lives, as well as for white children in their charge.
The dolls portray young and old African Americans, playful boys and girls, well-dressed gentlemen, elegant young ladies, and distinguished older men and women. Made with scraps of cloth, ribbon and lace, or old socks, and stuffed with wool or cotton. Their faces are embroidered, stitched and painted to express a variety of emotions, each representing a fascinating story of culture and identity in American history.
