DR. SEUSS - The Cat in the Hat
About the Item
So much of what we learn about writing as children is somehow parched and joyless. In the classroom, words are often transformed into starchy, serious, nasty things, not at all like the liquid morsels that slip from our lips effortlessly everyday. They become the worst sort of tin soldiers, lined up in some correct order, prisoners of rules and regulations... In the midst of this sorry state of affairs came a man who turned the tin soldiers into balloon animals, who took words and juggled them, twirled them, bounced them off the page."-Anna Quindlen
In the 1950s, when parents worried that children were too distracted by new diversions like television, Houghton Mifflin challenged Theodor Seuss Geisel "to write a children's book that would excite young readers in the way that typical grade-school primers had failed to do" (Theodor Seuss Geisel: Author and Illustrator, Peterson) using only 225 words. In 1957, "the book that finally emerged was quite different from the typical primer in which spotlessly clean boys and girls talk and act with unfailing propriety... and changed dramatically the way in which youngsters learn to read" (American National Biography). After three years, The Cat in the Hat had sold more than on million copies, and became the first of Random House's Beginner Books.
