Major-General Abner Doubleday & Major-General John Robinson in the Civil War

About the Item

Major-General Abner Doubleday and Brevet Major-General John C. Robinson in the Civil War [In Memoriam: Abner Doubleday 1819-1893 and John Cleveland Robinson 1817-1897]. Published by the State of New York, J.B. Lyon Co. Albany NY, 1918. In many of the world's military establishments, a brevet was a warrant giving a commissioned officer a higher rank title as a reward for gallantry or meritorious conduct but may not confer the authority, precedence, or pay of real rank. An officer so promoted was referred to as being brevetted. Abner Doubleday 1819-1893 was a career United States Army officer and Union major general in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was his finest hour, but his relief by Maj. Gen. George G. Meade caused lasting enmity between the two men. In San Francisco, after the war, he obtained a patent on the cable car railway that still runs there. In his final years in New Jersey, he was a prominent member and later president of the Theosophical Society.
