Nicolas Poussin, French Book by Pierre Rosenberg, 1994

About the Item

Nicolas Poussin 1594-1665, French book by Pierre Rosemberg et Louis-Antoine prat, 1995. This book was published after the fourth centenary of the artist's birth. The volume accompanies the most acute extensive retrospective that, to date, has never been dedicated to this great French painter. Through a set of two hundred and forty-five works (paintings and drawings accompanied by critical notes) from museums and private collections around the world, the entire career of Nicolas Poussin is retraced in detail here. The fifteen introductory essays are followed by the catalog proper, divided into four large sections: Poussin before Rome (1594-1624) The first stay in Rome (1624-1640) The Parisian period (1640-1642) The second stay in Rome (1642-1665). This richly illustrated study of Nicolas Poussin, a great master of the 17th century, accompanies the jointly held exhibition at the Grand Palais, Paris (27 September to 2 January 1995) and The Royal Academy, London (19 January to 9 April 1995). Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was The greatest French painter of the 17th century and one of the greatest painters of all time. His profound understanding of the art of antiquity and the Italian Renaissance led him to create works of such sophistication, clarity, and discipline that they remained the model for all classicizing artists up to Cezanne and even into our century. Although Poussin's subject matter was widely religious and mythological, the book shows in its illuminating introductory essay that it derived from themes and preoccupations that were intensely personal at the origin. At the same time, Poussin's study of the countryside around Rome laid the foundations for landscape paintings of heroic grandeur and lyrical beauty. This lavish and beautifully illustrated volume encompasses much recent research on Poussin and, as such, will be of vital interest to art historians. It also explores and illuminates a fundamental art of the Western classical tradition and presents it in all its glory. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. We say retro for the fiftieth anniversary of the Decorative Arts. OK, go retro! Joséphine Baker, Charlot, la Violettera, bell bottoms, the threepenny franc, and Valentino reappear in our mythology. Einstein's surrealism, Picasso the Augustus and Cocteau the White Clown, Stravinsky, and Freud have not left her. With the lamé shirt...
