About the Item
McCarthy, Cormac. No Country for Old Men. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2005. First Edition. Octavo. In original black cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine. Original publisher's dust jacket.
Presented is a first edition printing of No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy. This book was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2005. The book is presented here in its original black cloth boards with gold lettering on the spine, as well as the original publisher’s dust jacket. “First American Edition” is stated on the copyright page.
Set along the United States and Mexico border in 1980, the story concerns an illicit drug deal gone wrong in a remote desert location. The title of No Country For Old Men comes from the poem "Sailing to Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats.
The book was well received at the time of publication in 2005. “Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men is as bracing a variation on… noir orthodoxies as any fan of the genre could expect, although his admirers may not be sure at first about quite how to take the book, which doesn't bend its genre or transcend it but determinedly straightens it back out” (Walter Kirn, The New York Times). “The dialogue is perfect. No one has McCarthy's ear for regional talk, nor eye for details of place. The writing transforms a standard western good-guy-bad-guy plot into serious literature” (Annie Proulx , The Guardian).
The novel was adapted into the 2007 film starring Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Barden, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
