Loosely inserted is the advertisement for exhibition of the original drawing for this book by E. H. Shepard at the Sporting Gallery, London, December 1927. [Haring-Smith C96; Cutler-Stiles p. 116] Condition: Near fine in Near fine dust-jacket. A collection of 35 illustrated poems for children, which Milne dedicated to his young son's (Christopher Robin) love interest: "To Anne Darlington, now she is seven and because she is so speshal (sic)." The Darlingtons were close friends of the Milnes and a marriage between Christopher and Anne had been envisaged, but did not happen, much to the chagrin of Mrs. Darlington. Accompanied by the enchanting drawings of Ernest H. Shepard, whom Milne had met as they both were contributors to Punch. Their collaboration spanned many projects and was fundamental to the success of the series. Several of the poems had previously appeared in different publications, including the New York Evening Post. "Milne wins the appreciation of adults as well as children with his sentimental picture of the reality of childhood." (Saturday Review; 25 Oct. 1927, p. 515). This copy is particularly desirable for its original First State dust jacket with the 7/6 net price on the spine, and its exhibition advertisement.

  • Blanco by OCTAVIO PAZ
    Located in Middletown, NY
A scarce example of one of the 29 privately circulated lettered copies. The entire run consisted of 529 copies, 500 of these being the numbered ones available to purchase. Paz, Octavio. BLANCO. Mexico City: Joaquín Mortiz, 1967. First, Limited Edition. 8vo., 9 x 6 3/4 in. (229 x 173 mm); printed in black and red, Bodoni type on Antique RLCH paper, joined to create a continuous 'concertina' of 32 pages (joined every 4) and printed on one side only. LEPORELLO BINDING with printed boards and cream cloth spine, title in black, slipcase. The binding is very faintly thumbed and slipcase has a closed tear to the base and some rubbing at corners but overall this delicate book is in wonderful condition. One of the 29 lettered and privately circulated copies, as stated on the limitation page, from a run of 529 (500 copies numbered). EXTRAS: "Aviso al lector" sheet printed on yellow paper. Very good. Octavio Paz wrote this poem in New Delhi between July and September of 1966, while he was serving as Mexico's Ambassador to India. As outlined in the "Aviso al lector", separately printed and included in this copy of the work, «Octavio Paz conceives the long poem as a different form and governed by its own logic, not as an expansion or extension of the short poem.» He begins experimenting with "poetry of movement, signs in rotation" culminating in Blanco. «Appearance, disappearance and reappearance of certain themes, presences, words, obsessions, the shape of Blanco is that of the spiral. There are two main currents—word and eroticism—that come together, separate and come together again. The text allows multiple readings: it is a cluster of meanings, a poem that contains several poems. ... The same poetic requirement governs the visual conception of the page and explains the particularities of this edition. Typesetting is one aspect of verbal composition. On the one hand, it is a kind of punctuation, not orthographic but rhythmic; on the other, it is the space where the written sign...

  • Christopher Milne. Enchanted Places, 1st Ed Inscribed by Milne & His Nanny, 1974
    Located in Hillsborough, NJ
AUTHOR: MILNE, Christopher. TITLE: The Enchanted Places. PUBLISHER: London: Eyre Methuen, 1974. DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY MILNE AND SIGNED BY HIS NANNY. 1 vol., hardcover, illustrated, inscribed by Milne on the front blank endleaf "- Birthday Morning 1975 - but also to remember the one of forty years ago, sun shining through a window in St. John Street & lighting a vase of daffodils on a little blue table & to remember to happy days of Christopher Robin & Pooh - & to remember -", under that signed by Christopher's Nanny (Olive Christine Rand Brockwell) "Always Old Nanny XXX XX X", bookplate to half-title additionally signed by Milne "A Favorite Friend", with the original DJ, not price clipped, FINE/NEAR FINE. Additionally, tipped to the front pastedown is an envelope in Milne's hand addressed to a Miss Elizabeth (Campbell) Hiskins containing a 2-page letter on Harbour Bookshop letterhead dated 28-2-75 which reads "How very nice of you to write to me: a letter like that couldn't possibly be a wol (sic). It made me very happy to think that I had helped make your birthday an enjoyable one. Yes, I have had a number of letters, many of the writers finding that the book awakened happy childhood memories, even though their own lives had been very different from mine. Often - as in your case - a common bond had been our skymen. I remember Michael and Geraldine well. So if you do ever see them again, please give them my best wishes. Yours sincerely Christopher Milne" ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The "Harbour Bookshop" was the bookstore owned and run by Milne and his daughter Clare who was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy. Milne remained close to his Nanny all his life. This book "The Enchanted Places" is dedicated to her. Olive was born on 2/23/1895 and died in 1978. Milne's reply letter to Elizabeth is dated 2/28/75. It's interesting to think that Milne would have asked Olive, quite possibly on her 80th birthday, to sign a copy of this book that he was giving as a birthday present. We know of no other book signed by Olive...
