Pavlovsk: Vol. 1 the Collections, by Emmanuel Ducamp, 1st Ed

About the Item

Pavlovsk: Volume 2 The Collections by Emmanuel Ducamp. Published by Alain de Gourcuff, Paris, 1993. 1st Ed hardcover. The most authoritative work on Pavlovsk in English. A stunningly photographed book, conveying the beauty of this Russian treasure. It focuses entirely on the art and architecture of Pavlovsk, the 18th-century palace near St. Petersburg built for the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich and his wife, Maria Feodorovna. Volume 2 focuses on the palace collections, beginning with a detailed description of the engraved cameos that the grand duchess spent much of her time carving and that are now preserved at the palace. The tastes of the duke and duchess detail the elaborate furniture collection of Empire and Rococo styles, and the subject matter of the paintings. We are a division of Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.

  • The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger, 1st Ed
    Located in valatie, NY
The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger. University of Texas Press, Sep 1, 2010. One of the most important collections of photography in the world. Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. It includes some 35,000 major and representative photographs from the 19th and 20th c; a research library of some 3,600 books, journals, and published articles; about 250 autographed letters and manuscripts; and more than 200 pieces of early photographic equipment. Its encyclopedic scope—as well as the expertise and taste with which the Gernsheims built the collection—makes the Gernsheim Collection one of the world's premier resources for the study and appreciation of the development of photography. Published to coincide with a landmark exhibition staged by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which owns the collection, this book presents masterpieces of the collection, along with lesser-known images of great historical significance. Arranged in chronological order, this selection effectively constitutes a visual history of photography from its beginnings to the mid-20th c. Each full-page image is accompanied by an extensive annotation in which Roy Flukinger describes the photograph's place in the evolution of photography and also within the Gernsheim Collection. Flukinger also provides an enlightening introduction in which he traces the Gernsheims' passionate careers as collectors and pioneering historians of photography, showing how their untiring efforts significantly contributed to the acceptance of photography as a fine art and as a field worthy of intellectual inquiry. Appreciations of the Gernsheim Collection by Alison Nordström and Mark Haworth...

  • Chinese Export Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer, Neptune, the God of Sea
    Located in Downingtown, PA
Chinese Export Porcelain European-subject Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer, Neptune, The God of The Sea, Dutch market, Yongzheng Period, Circa 1730-35 The Chinese Export porcelain, probably made for the Dutch market, depicts Neptune, the God of the Sea, standing with his triton in the center of the design with a number of other figures to his left and right with three large fish or whales at his feet. The lower section of the design depicting the sea. The border of each piece with a repeating diaper design. Dimensions: Saucer: 4 1/2 inches diameter x 3/4 inch high (11.53cm diameter x 1.91cm high); Cup: 2 3/4 inches diameter x 1 3/4 inches high (6.99cm diameter x 4.45cm high). The design is after an etching called `The Realm of Neptune` by Frederick Bloemaert (c.1610-c.1669) completed between 1650-1656, after a drawing by his father Abraham Bloemaert (1566–1651). This is a Baroque design which is only found in blue and white on Chinese porcelain, it occurs on fine grained porcelain and Chinese soft-paste porcelain. Both dinner services and tea services were produced. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a plate in their collection, Helena Woolworth McCann Collection, Purchase, Winfield Foundation Gift, 1966 (Ass. # 66.27.5). Reference: Jorg states "The depiction of Neptune, the God of the Sea of classical mythology occurs in several varieties on Chine de Commande from the 1740`s onwards. How well the design sold is illustrated by an order from 1778, when they sent a chocolate cup with this design as a model for similarly decorated plates. However, the Dutch merchants...
