Printed in Basel, published by Amerbach, Petri and Froben, from the year 1505. Book size approx: 22 cm x 5 cm x 31,5 cm. Collation: 236 nn. Sheet. Bound in a brown full leather binding in the style of the time over wooden covers with rich blind embossing and 2 clasps. Volume 9 of the important first complete edition published from 1505-1517 with a focus on the Gospel of John, Epistles and Revelations. Very Fine copy, carefully cleaned, throughout small wormholes, backed on the title, B3 with small, completed corner tear, b1 bound to the end of the layer. Title with monastic ownership note of 1726. Elaborately and decoratively bound. We have found a comparison copy at the ZB Zurich, which is identical with our edition. Augustinus of Hippo, also: Augustinus of Thagaste, Augustin or (probably not authentic) Aurelius Augustinus (* 13. November 354 in Tagaste, also: Thagaste, in Numidia, today Souk Ahras in Algeria; † 28. August 430 in Hippo Regius in Numidia, today Annaba in Algeria) was, along with Hieronymus, Ambrose of Milan and Pope Gregory the Great, one of the four Latin church teachers of late antiquity and an important philosopher on the threshold between antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Augustine was first rhetorician in Thagaste, Carthage, Rome and Milan. After being a Manichaean for years, he was baptized Christian in 387 under the influence of the sermons of Bishop Ambrose of Milan; from 395 until his death in 430 he was Bishop of Hippo Regius. His commemoration day in the liturgy is August 28. Augustine wrote numerous theological writings, many of which have survived. These writings, though not free of contradictions, form for Augustine a unity; the Christian faith is for him the basis of knowledge (crede, ut intelligas: "believe, that you may know"). The work Confessions is one of the most influential autobiographical texts in world literature. Augustine's philosophy contains elements originating from Plato but modified in the Christian sense. These include, in particular, the threefold division of reality into the world of the highest being, which is accessible only to the spirit, the spirit-soul of man, and the lower world of becoming, which is accessible to the senses. The first biography of Augustine comes from Possidius of Calama, who knew him well as a pupil. As one of the most influential theologians and philosophers of late Christian antiquity and patristics, he had a significant influence on the thinking of the West. In the Orthodox Church, on the other hand, he remained practically unknown; when his teaching became known through Greek translations in Constantinople in the 14th century, it met with rejection, as far as it did not correspond anyway to the consensus of other church fathers. His theology influenced the teachings of almost all Western churches, whether Catholic or Protestant. The term Augustinism characterizes its reception in religion, philosophy and history. (sourc. Wik.). Johannes Amerbach (1430-25.12.1513) (Also: Amorbachius, Welker; Hans von Amerbach, Hans von Venedig) Biography: Scholar and printer of German origin; real name: Johannes Welker. Origin from Amorbach in the Odenwald (Lower Franconia). Father of Bruno, Basilius I and Bonifacius Amerbach. Studied with Johannes Heynlin in Paris (1461 Baccalaureus, 1462 or 1464 Magister Artium), lived later for a longer time in Venice (therefore also: Hans von Venedig) and from 1477 (?) in Basel, where he began his printing activity in 1478 (HLS: 1475). Joined the saffron guild in 1481 and became a citizen of Basel on 5.5.1484. First lived near the Aeschentor, then bought (on 8.6.1482; after his wedding with Barbara Ortenberg?) the house zum Kaiserstuhl in the Rheingasse. According to Benzing from 1502 active in a printing, publishing and book trade Community with Johannes Petri and/or Johannes Froben. (Previously also with Jacob Wolff von Pforzheim.) Worked closely with the Basel Charterhouse, which lent him numerous manuscripts and in return each received a copy of his latest prints. The Offizin was located in the house to the armchair, which he later sold to his partner Johannes Froben. Amerbach's sons Bruno (1485-1519) and Basilius (1488-1535) worked in their father's business (according to Günthart later also with Froben) as proofreaders and printers/book-keepers. Also successful as a bookseller, with contacts to colleagues in Nuremberg (Anton Koberger) and Strasbourg (Johannes Grüninger), but also to numerous scholars of his time. Comment on the year of birth: There seems to be some confusion about this. The data vary around 15 years: According to BBK old born 1430, according to GND however approx. 1441, according to Reske 1443/1445 and according to ADB approx. 1440. The lawyer Basilius Amerbach (1533-1591) systematically built up an art cabinet including a library. The so-called Amerbach-Kabinett, which was thus created, comprised a collection of world-famous paintings, the estate of Erasmus, and some 9,000 books. Among many other things, Amerbach owned about 2000 Old Master Drawings, mainly by German and Swiss artists, including over 100 works by Hans Holbein the Younger. In 1661, the city and University of Basel acquired the cabinet, laying the foundations for the first public museum in Europe. Today, the collection is an important part of the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Historisches Museum Basel and the University Library Basel. (sourc. Wik.).
