First edition, first printing. In original dust jacket and boards, with new archival cloth slipcase. Presented is a stated first edition of Clarence Bud Anderson’s To Fly and Fight: Memoirs of a Triple Ace. The book was published in October of 1990 by St. Martin’s Press, in New York. The book was written with Joseph P. Hamelin and features a foreword by Chuck Yeager. Anderson signed and inscribed the front free endpaper in black ink. The inscription reads, “To Jim - Best Wishes, CE ‘Bud’ Anderson.” Yeagar also signed the book, “Chuck Yeagar,” in blue ink, just below Anderson’s signature. The previous owner documented the book’s gift and date of original purchase in blue ink, “Gift from Bev. Purchased at 357th FTR GP Reunion, Marietta, GA, 9/91.” In To Fly and Fight, top fighter pilot Clarence "Bud" Anderson tells the story of a life in aviation, from his days as a World War II fighter combat to his years of dangerous test-piloting. In thirty years of service, Anderson flew two combat tours during World War II, tested aircraft at the Wright Field and the Edwards Air Force Base, commanded three fighter units, and was decorated twenty-five times. Writing with freelancer Hamelin, Anderson relates his spectacular aerial confrontations with Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs and conveys the unique mindset a fighter pilot needs in order to survive. During World War II, Anderson flew with Chuck Yeager in the famed 357th Squadron, where he became a triple ace by shooting fifteen enemy planes out of the sky. Yeagar provides the foreword for this memoir, in which he recalls his time flying with Anderson, stating “in an airplane, the guy was a mongoose… the best fighter pilot I ever saw.” After the war, Anderson became an Air Force test pilot in the ``golden age of flight testing.'' In To Fly and Fight, he recalls his numerous hair-raising test-flights, while highlighting the challenge and risk of such work. After two tours at the Pentagon, Anderson flew ground-support combat missions in Southeast Asia and became one of the few fighter pilots to serve in combat in both WWII and Vietnam. This first edition, signed by two of the most celebrated American test pilots and fighters, is the perfect addition to any serious collection of aviation or WWII history memorabilia. Condition: Overall very good condition. Book has no significant wear or damage. Presented in the original publisher's boards and pictorial dust jacket. New mylar on dust jacket. Inscription and signatures are legible, in black and blue ink, on the free endpaper. Interior is healthy. Presented with a new custom cloth slipcase, with an inlay photograph of Anderson on the front.
