19th Century Italian Hand Carved Coral and Gold Bacchante Bacchus Cameo Pendant

About the Item

19th Century Italian hand carved coral and gold Bacchante / Bacchus pendant. Made from 9 Kt gold and natural, untreated hand carved blood coral from Sicily. Weighs approx. 13.4 g, of which approx. 3.5 g are of 9 kt gold. Finely engraved by Trapanese coral masters. Trapani (a Sicilian city in Italy) is considered the reference point for the entire sector relating to the processing of coral since the 1500s. The artistic workmanship of Trapani and the skill of the engravers acquired a great notoriety. This piece of coral depicts a very pretty Bacchante with wine leaves in her hair. Bacchante is a priestess of Bacchus, the god of wine. Her name is associated with women participating in wild parties or she is referred as a shameless drunk woman. In other words, the fun party girl in Roman times.

A Kebaya is an Indonesian blouse without buttons, this golden Kerosang has 4 simple pins with 'claw-like' settings around coral 'buttons'. Usually kebaya pins have 3 pins and are more decorated elaborately in Indonesian style. This one has a more sleek 'Dutch Zealandish' design, that is why I'm pretty sure this antique costume jewellery pin...
