Chinese Butterfly and Gourd Charm Ring, c. 1900

About the Item

Dated to the late 19th century, this silver charm ring was believed to protect the wearer from bad luck and malevolent spirits. The ring is decorated in relief with a round gourd and a butterfly, surrounded by leaves and small flowers. This motif of a butterfly and a gourd or melon was popular during the Qing dynasty and conveys blessings for a large family with many sons. A short chain hangs from the face of the ring, ending in a small repoussé charm of a pomegranate. Ring band is adjustable. All jewelry sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.
