Early Ed Wiener Surreal Fish Earrings in Sterling and Copper

About

These stunning silver and copper earrings by Ed Wiener could also easily be converted into cuff links by a jeweler if so desired. The earrings have the original sterling screwback findings which allow for wear on non-pierced ears. These earrings are early examples of work by Wiener performed in the late 1940s or early 1950s and are indicative of his time spent with fellow NYC jeweler Sam Kramer. In the early years of Wiener's work Kramer's surrealistic influence can be strongly felt in certain designs such as these earrings. Wiener was one of the noted early Mid-Century Modern studio jewelers who helped set the standard for the period. His work is featured in virtually all the books on the subject of mid-20th century modernist jewelry. Virtually all modernist jewelers of the mid-20th century era produced jewelry with a "fish" motif, but this design by Ed Wiener is easily one of the best and most unique interpretations to be found. Featuring design complexity and shadow box work coupled with the use of mixed metals, they are fine examples that showcase both his design and technical skills. Signed "ED.WIENER" sterling to the reverse on both examples.
