Set of Swank Monogramed Cufflinks and Money Clip
About the Item
Swank was started in 1897 in Attleboro, MA as the Attleboro Manufacturing Co., and specialized in making and selling women’s jewelry. When the United States joined WWI, the company contributed by making metal dog tags for soldiers, as well as other emblems for the military. Around this time, the men’s jewelry line had really taken off and the women's line was discontinued. In 1937 the company was rebranded "Swank" and exclusively produced men's dress jewelry. During WWII Swank produced all of the purple hearts and other medals awarded to soldiers. One can infer that Swanks participation making dog tags and military emblems inspired the creation of pieces like these monogram cufflinks and money clip. Monogrammed jewelry became the peace time equivalent to a dog tag. Indeed, there is almost a militaristic or emblematic quality to these cufflinks.
