This war-dated Army commission for Second Lieutenant Joseph Audenried is signed by Abraham Lincoln. The signature is accompanied by a reproduction photograph of Lincoln in 1863. The original commission was signed by Lincoln on September 9, 1861 and assigns Audenned to the famed 1st Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry. Only five months after the start of the American Civil War, Lincoln signed this back-dated commission. Although it was approved September 9th, the promotion states that Audenried would have been Second Lieutenant since June 24, 1861. Exact commission dates were hotly argued among soldiers at the time. Not only did it determine how much an individual should be paid, but it also provided a clear hierarchy valuing seniority among those of the same rank. Immediately preceding this document, the Union had suffered several major losses including the First Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. Claiming only minor battle victories, the Union was beginning to have doubts about its military leadership and the brevity of the war. The same year Lincoln wrote to a Union General, “He who does something at the head of one Regiment, will eclipse him who does nothing at the head of a hundred.” The First Cavalry was an instrumental part of the Union’s advancements into Confederate territory. Organized by an act of Congress in 1861, most of the cavalry fought in the Peninsula Campaign in Virginia but also played a major role on the Rapidan Line, the Raid of Richmond, and Sheridan’s advancement through the Shenandoah Valley. The commission document signed by President Lincoln also bears the signature of Simon Cameron, then Secretary of War. A re-print photograph of Lincoln accompanies the document. Healy" to the role of "Marshal of the United States in and for the Southern District of Alabama." The appointment is countersigned by "Hamilton Fish" as Secretary of State. The document is partially printed in formal script, and completed by hand in black ink. The document reads in full: “Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States of America. This is a very scarce WWI Work Relief Fund poster featuring the Harvard Radios competing against the Princeton Aviators. The game, held on November 23, 1918, was a benefit football game to raise money for the war effort. The poster dynamically depicts two football players mid-action. Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. The poster was illustrated by the artist J. Liello. His signature is printed in stone, visible on the left side of the composition. An Albert Einstein typed & signed letter, dated June 10, 1939. Fresh to the market after 84 years in the ownership of the original recipient's family. In 1939, on the eve of WWII, Einstein became involved in national campaigns to raise money and awareness for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany for the U.S. On June 10, 1939 he personally sent letters to several Jewish civic leaders, thanking each of them for their contributions to the cause. This example was sent to the prominent New York businessman Mr Nathan Leavy. It's typed on a single sheet of Einstein's personal stationary, embossed with his address at Princeton University. The letter measures 8.5'' x 11'' and is presented in very good condition, with just faint horizontal mailing folds and minor creasing. The content of this letter is a profound, personal statement on Albert Einstein's personal Jewish heritage. The text is based almost word-for-word on a radio address he gave on March 22 on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal. The letter reads in full: "My Dear Mr Leavy: "May I offer my sincere congratulations to you on the spledid work you have undertaken on behalf of the refugees during dedication week. ''The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness.
