Medal probably made for Belgian delegation to Geneva Exposition 1896
About the Item
This very detailed medal was probably made for the Belgian delegation to the Geneva Exposition of 1896, perhaps as a sample. Whilst the lettering around the perimeter on the obverse is raised, the number 5 in the date 1895 is indented and The Beaux Arts & Industrie Exposition took place in Geneva in 1896. The obverse carries a depiction of the Belgian coat of arms below the Latin inscription "Post Tenebras Lux", which translates as "After Darkness, Light". The designer was the noted French/Swiss engraver and medallist Jules Georges Hantz (1846-1920). The diameter is 60 mm (just over 2.5 inches), the thickness at the rim is 5 mm (just under .25 of an inch) and it weighs 117 gms (4 ounces). It is in very good condition with a very small area of damage to the rim and some slight rubbing of the gilding.
