Mid-20th Century American Tin Charity Box

About the Item

Jewish tin charity box, New York, USA, circa 1950. Inscribed on the front and on the back "Brother and sister in Israel" and "It feels wonderful to be a brother or sister in Israel" on both sides. Collecting funds for AMIT programs. Founded on May 10, 1925. AMIT was at the forefront of Youth children from Europe and their resettlement in mandatory Palestine later participated in the resettlement of thousands of children, many of them orphans, who survived the Holocaust. Tzedakah is a Hebrew word commonly translated as charity, however the word is more closely connected to the English word justice. Tzedakah refers to a Jewish obligation to contribute to the creation of a just world. It is important to note that tzedakah is not only money, but refers to any act that creates a more just world. Giving tzedakah is so important that is considered one of three acts – along with repentance and prayer – that can save a person from death.
