About the Item
Pair of bronze Viking 1 and 2 Mars landing commemorative medallions, circa 1976. This rare pair was issued by Medallic Art Co. to commemorate the Viking Mission in 1976; each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter designed to photograph the surface of Mars from orbit, and a lander designed to study the planet from the surface. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20, 1976, and was joined by the Viking 2 lander on September 3, 1976. The medals are come in their original presentation box and measure 2.5"D x .25"H.
