Rare Bronze Portrait Plaque for The US Copper Cent by Victor Brenner, Dated 1907

About the Item

A rare copper-patinated bronze bas-relief portrait plaque of Abraham Lincoln by Lithuanian / American sculptor Victor David Brenner. Titled bottom centre 'ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1809-1865’ and bearing impressed artist marks for Victor David Brenner as shown along the far-right outer edge, together with copyright marks & date marks for 1907. The outer left edge bears impressed foundry marks for S. Klaber & Co. New York City. Victor David Brenner (1871-1924), studied with noted French medalist Oscar Roty at the Julien Academy in Paris, and regarded as one of the most celebrated medallists of his time and is represented in the permanent collection of the American Wing of The Metropolitan Museum, New York City. This portrait was chosen by Theodore Roosevelt for the face of the US copper cent coin, sculpted by Victor D. Brenner, and based on a photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken by noted Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, and minted in 1907. The United States copper cent coin still bears Brenner's initials beneath the truncation of Lincoln's profile.

  • A Rare Anglo Indian Double Miniature Portrait Picture Frame, Circa 1890
    Located in Ottawa, Ontario
The freestanding cartouche-shaped tinned copper frame embossed overall with scrolling leafy vines surrounding a pair of open oval reserves flanked on either side by embossed motifs of lovebirds. The back showing a hinged easel support which allows the frame to be freestanding, and two top loading compartments intended to receive a pair of framed portrait miniatures which can then be viewed through the twin oval open reserves on the front. The rather naive albeit charming construction & decoration is consistent with items sold by street merchants in the various bazaars & marketplaces frequented by Western & European tourists travelling throughout India and The Middle East during the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century. There are surprisingly very few, if any similar examples of this frame currently available. This would most certainly be a unique addition to any collector of portrait miniatures, particularly those made by India Company School...

  • Rare Set of Christian Art Deco Bronze Jesus, Mary & Angel Wall Plaques by Norga
    Located in Lisse, NL
Rare set of three, good size and mint condition works of religious art. This group of three bronze works of art (deco) all depict biblical scenes and they can be placed and worshipped in all kinds of settings. Meaningful and perfectly handcrafted works of religious art like these were mostly used in monasteries, private homes, but also on the more expensive cemeteries. The one on the left depicts Mother Mary and John the Baptist as they mourn over the body of Christ right after He was taken from the cross. The bronze plaque in the middle, we believe, depicts the third station where Jesus falls for the first time. The third bronze depicts a beautiful Arch Angel kneeling...
