Vintage Columbia 30th Street Studio NYC Music Stands

About the Item

Extremely rare pieces of Music History. These are vintage music stands from Columbia's legendary 30th Street Recording Studio, affectionately known as "The Church". If these music stands could talk, they would tell incredible stories of music history from the 1950s-1980s. Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Muhammad Ali, and Charles Mingus among many others used these stands or stands like these at the Columbia Studio. In 1948, an abandoned Armenian Greek Orthodox church at 207 East 30th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan, was transformed into one of the world's greatest recording studios, where some of the most dynamic and enduring records were created. From Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" to Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story," from Miles Davis'"Kind Of Blue" to the 30th Street Studio provided a distinctive ambiance, featuring a kaleidoscope of sublime sonic qualities unparalleled in the recording industry. These stands come to us from the family of a former janitor at the studio who saved these from the dumpster when the studio was closed in 1981. The stands themselves appear to be from the late 1940s-early 1950s judging from their streamlined, almost Art Deco Hamilton logos. The Columbia logos were apparently painted on the backs of the stands in the late 1960s, and June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash and Luis Alberto Spinetta can be seen using the painted logo stands in the 1970s.
