About the Item

Vintage Kon Nederlandsche Automobiel Club enameled car grill emblem / automobile badge featuring a heraldic lion with sword flanked by crown and wings. "The KNAC, Royal Dutch Automobile Club, is an interest group of motorists, founded on 3 July 1898 under the name Nederlandsche Automobiel Club (NAC). When it was founded, there were only about ten cars on the road in the Netherlands. The first two cars had just been imported into the Netherlands two years earlier. The still young club immediately fulfilled its statutory role to promote club trips; the very first real ride was organized by the French sister club A.C.F., with which there were good contacts, from Paris to Amsterdam. In 1899 the club started its other role as an advocate when it expressed its support for the policy of the then Minister of Water Management, Trade and Industry to end obstacles to cars. Van Harinxma thoe Slooten announces the establishment of the "Legion of Benevolent Road Users" to increase courtesy in traffic, so that safety on the street will be increased. In 1904 the N.A.C., together with 12 other automobile clubs, founded the A.I.A.C.R. (Association Internationale des Automobiles Clubs Reconnus) with the aim of promoting and coordinating motorsport and the interests of motorists worldwide for the various country clubs. The A.I.A.C.R. was later renamed FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). On 20 June 1913, H.M. Queen Wilhelmina granted the N.A.C. the designation Royal. From that moment on it became the K.N.A.C. (later KNAC without the dots). The club issued the FIA sports licenses in the Netherlands for many years, until in 1980 the KNAC sports committee was spun off into the KNAC National Autosport Federation (KNAF). The KNAC continued with its other fields of activity such as advocacy, tourism, etc. After the war, the KNAC distinguished itself by being the first in the Netherlands to set up anti-skid schools. In doing so, she gave substance to safer driving. The main objectives of the KNAC are essentially the same as those of 1898: to promote the interests of the motorist and to let the car be enjoyed as a phenomenon in all aspects. The KNAC has far fewer members than the ANWB and does not focus on walkers and cyclists. The members are enthusiasts of cars, especially vintage cars."
