Art Deco S S Normandie Ocean Liner Travel Agency Display Model, circa 1935

About

When launched in 1935, the French liner Normandie was the epitome of modern design. It was the largest and fastest liner in the world, and certainly the most glamorous. The interiors were lavish affairs, with art and decoration by Rene Lalique, Jean Dunand, Raymond Subes, and Jean Dupas. Unfortunately, the ship was short lived. With the outbreak of war, the Normandie was confined to New York City's harbor, where it was converted to military troop housing. It was being converted to a troop transport vessel in 1942 when it caught fire, sinking into the Hudson River. Our 1935 model is an original painted wood ship, used as a promotional piece for travel agency window displays. It is in remarkable original condition, with interior lights. A wooden base and acrylic cover are included with the ship.
