French Onyx and Enamel Miniature Table Cabinet

About the Item

This elegant dressing table cabinet uses precious materials on a delicate scale, resulting in a piece that is both practical and luxurious. The cabinet is crafted in green onyx and set with contrasting pink, veined marble, and has an architectural design, formed as a three-tiered structure. Its curved upper pediment is mounted with a gilt bronze shield with feathers, and each of the three tiers are distinguished by pierced, gilt bronze galleries which offer decorative display surfaces. The galleries are further ornamented with exquisite hanging lobes of champlevé enamel patternwork. The front of the cabinet is set with a large, rectangular mirror, which is framed with beaded gilt bronze and further decorated with champlevé enamel lobes around the edges. The mirror can be opened at a clasp, and it swings forward as a door to reveal two interior onyx shelves. The entire cabinet is set upon a rectangular base, all sitting on intricately cast gilt bronze feet.

This exceptional, 18 carat gold Easter egg was crafted by the famous London-based royal jewellers, Asprey & Co. The piece was then retailed by Garrard & Co, who once worked in collaboration with Asprey, producing luxury jewellery and silver for an elite clientele. The egg has been crafted from gold filigree — that is, gold wires interwoven to make a delicate lace-like pattern. The gold is arranged to form the image of a peacock, with a magnificent fanned train, composed of red, dark blue and green coloured plique-à-jour enamel. The light blue body of the peacock, and its long swirling light and dark blue tail feathers, have been crafted from intricate guilloché enamel, which is often found on Fabergé style eggs...

  • Antique French 19th Century Jewelry Box Flap Door Miniature Wood Cabinet
    Located in Firenze, IT
This beautiful French late 19th century chest of drawers in black ebonized wood and cherrywood reproduces with perfect proportions in scale a miniature cabinet with three drawers and an upper flap door that opens to reveal a white marble top and an oval mirror inside, nice hand carved band on top with geometrical pattern and molded base. The black lacquered wood creates a wonderful contrast with the beautiful honey-colored wood grain. Despite its convenient size, extremely detailed, this chest of drawers is equipped with a white Carrara marble top and a small mirror that make it even more special and useful. The model of a piece of furniture was originally created by cabinet makers to show their skills to the customer and to present the sample of the furniture which would then have been produced on a larger scale. These commode miniatures, along with other specimens, were displayed in the craftsman's workshop to serve as examples to aid the potential client in making a selection. Some also think that these little chests were used as doll and puppets...
