About the Item

Weetamoe was constructed by the Herreshoff shipyard according to plan by Clinton Crane for defence consortium of the Americ's Cup, referred to George Nicholls of New York Yacht Club. It raced for the choice of defender in 1930 and 1934. Measures: Length 37m, width 6 m with draught 5 m. It was demolished in 1937. Cm 193 x 75.2 (H) - inches 75.98 x 29.60 (H). Project coming from the archives of Uffa Fox, an English boat designer and sailing enthusiast, and never entered the commercial circuit. Weetamoe was constructed by the Herreshoff shipyard according to plan by Clinton Crane for defence consortium of the Americ's Cup, referred to George Nicholls of New York Yacht Club. Born in Rhode Island in 1848, Nat Herreshoff graduated engineer in 1870 at the prestigious MIT university. In 1878 Nat went into partnership with his brother and founded a shipyard in Bristol. The yard was specialized in the construction of steam boats and sailing yachts racing. John Brown Herreshoff, his elder brother, was blind but had a great commercial instinct and he was dealing with the upper class clientele. He also had the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations mentally. The shipyard quickly gained a reputation and here they were produced at least 2,000 projects: ranging from dinghies to 12 foot America's Cup defenders 45 meters long. The years between 1890 and 1920 were called the golden age of construction and carpenters and shipwrights vied to be hired by the Herreshoff brothers both for prestige and for the pay that was the best of all the shipyards on the Atlantic coast of U.S. Nat Herreshoff designed, built and sailed on boats, from 1893 to 1920, which successfully defended the America's Cup. He died in 1938 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Shipping is insured by Lloyd's London.
