Antique 20th Century English Made Large Wood Pond Yacht c.1920

About the Item

A fantastic Gaff Cutter pond yacht, lovely “bread and butter“ wood hull construction dating to the early part of the 20th Century. This particular pond yacht features original calico sails, rigged with chrome fittings and also a weighted keel, elegantly mounted on a brass & mahogany stand. Bread and butter construction is when planks of wood are stacked on top of each other (the bread) and then stuck together with glue (the butter) before being carefully carving the laminated stack into the desired shape. The yacht is an example of British pond racing yacht and would have raced against similar yachts in competitions, club against club, all over Britain, sometimes against overseas clubs as well. Just like in real sailing competitions, to make things equal in the race, waterlines had to be the same length, plus overall area of the sails needed to be the same. Today these pond yachts are extremely decorative and a great addition to any home. We offer complimentary shipping to all our customers in Great Britain.
