Boatswain's whistle in brass and copper English manufacture of the 1920s
About the Item
Boatswain's whistle made of brass and copper English manufacture of the 1920s, on the sides anchor. Length 13.x2.5x1.8 cm - inches 5.3x0.8x0.7. Good condition.
This type of whistle is composed of a small tube, called a cannon, attached to the end of the handle, called a keel, and a perforated barrel-shaped ball, called a buoy, from which the sound comes out. It is gripped at keel height, between the thumb and forefinger; the other fingers are used to adjust the intensity and modulation of the sound.
Curiosity
Quello di lanciare ordini e segnali mediante un fischio o una serie di fischi modulati è un sistema la cui origine si perde nella notte dei tempi.
It appears that the whistle was used on ships to convey the captain's orders as early as the Middle Ages, but its presence on board is known with certainty in the late seventeenth century.
Until the advent of electronic amplification equipment, whistling was the only way to be heard even in particularly adverse conditions, such as when the wind was howling, at sea during a storm, or in the course of a battle, and the human voice was not sufficient to convey orders capable of being heard and understood by all.
