Large English Marine Writing Desk - Solid Mahogany and Brass - Xixth Century

About the Item

Large solid mahogany marine case decorated with brass reinforcements and blank cartouche. This magnificent work is English in the taste of the productions of Martin Guillaume Biennais, the goldsmith of Napoleon I (1764-1843) and the two empresses. It closes with a small key. When open, it forms a writing desk with a sloping surface covered with black leather. This writing surface is divided into two elements, each of which reveals a mahogany compartment. The lower one is held in place by two small brass 'pushers'. At the top, the writing desk is equipped with five compartments: a long one in the middle (with a lid), framed by two medium ones (with lids, one with a small bone knob) and two small ones at the ends (used for inkwells).  The middle locker, on the right, contains a system that allows the plinth underneath to be opened, which houses three secret 'mini' drawers. It also reveals two small candle holders for writing by candlelight when it is dark and is fitted with a ruler, cleverly closed in its copper tube. Period: 19th century Circa :1820 Dimensions : Height : 17cm x Length : 60,5cm x Depth : 30cm Beautiful model, the use of solid mahogany (rot-proof wood) and the corner reinforcements in cladding are intended to make the box more robust to the falls that could create the roll on a boat at sea. A refined object adapted to the daily life of a gentleman naval officer. Very good condition, cleaned and refurbished by our workshops.

Marked in hollow : GC below Artist, man of letters and aesthetician, the career of the sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716 - 1791) is particularly exemplary. Overcoming the handicap of his birth, this brilliant self-taught man with an extraordinary personality rubbed shoulders with the greatest. Protégé of Mme de Pompadour, friend of Diderot and the Encyclopedists, he was able to impose himself by his talent and his culture. The works executed at the church of Saint Roch and his position as director of sculpture at the Manufacture de Sèvres are in a way the prelude to his work in Saint Petersburg.  The imposing bronze Cavalier...
