About the Item
Prismatic compass by detection signed T.G. Co Ltd London no. B 21681 1940 MK III, in use by British army officers during World War II. This is a small vintage compass typically used in recreational sailing, thus on boats less prone to magnetic deflection. It can also be held in the hand and thus away from the magnetic fields of the boat. It’s equipped with a sighting system with target complete with optical prism for magnification and a goniometric compass rose so that the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle can be measured. Good condition, fully functional. Measures diameter 5.8 cm- inches 2.3, height 3 cm- inches 1.2.
T.G. Co. Ltd. was the abbreviation used by The Gramophone Company. After merging with its subsidiary His Master's Voice and Columbia Graphophone Co. in 1931 it became EMI (Electric & Musical Industries), using the brand name "The Gramophone Co." for various items, later changing it for wartime contracts to T.G. Co. Ltd. This company ended its operations at the end of World War II.
Curiosity
The first historical records of the use of magnetic directive force in Europe date back to the late sec. XII or early XIII and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. The gimbal made its first appearance around the middle of the sec. XVI. An exact description is given in the short compendium "De la esfera y de la arte de navegar," by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise guidelines for the construction of the compass.
